Hmong New Year Festival

Every year, during that week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, thousands of Hmong families from across the country gather at the fairgrounds in Fresno, California, to celebrate their community’s most important holiday. Traditionally, villages would gather together after finishing the hard work of the harvest.

Eating, dancing, perhaps a bit of courting...it was a time to wear your best clothes and serve all your favorite foods, from spicy pickles to green papaya salad.

If you’re anywhere near California’s Central Valley in the middle of winter, and especially if you like to eat meat, meat and more meat...you really must head to Fresno to join the fun at the Hmong festival.
