This a ginger grater. The thin, parallel strips of wood in the middle have been carefully whittled to sharp, asymmetric points. The direction of the points alternates by row. A knob of fresh ginger root rubbed across them will be reduced to a pulp in seconds. I like this grater better than the little dishes with the serrated surfaces for large amounts of ginger or when I want just a bit of texture left in the ginger. Pointed bamboo sounds dangerous, I know, but the grater is amazingly safe. It also scores high marks for its good looks.

If you would like a grater like this one, look in the kitchen utensil area of Chinese and Southeast Asian markets.
