Nutmeg Fruit Meera picks and then opens a
not-quite-ripe fruit from one of her grandmother's nutmeg trees. You can
see the brilliant red covering that wraps delicately around the nutmeg's
brown kernel. Botanists label this tendril-tissue an arillus, but
we cooks know and love it as mace.
